An automatic winds itself from your wrist movement. The seconds hand sweeps instead of ticking, and there is a small machine inside doing the work. It needs servicing every few years, and it stops if you leave it in a drawer.

A quartz runs on a battery. It keeps better time, sits slimmer on the wrist, and you can ignore it for two years until the cell needs changing.

What we tell people at the counter: if the machine itself interests you, buy the automatic. If you just want the right time on your wrist, buy the quartz. Plenty of our regulars own both.
